    1. The arrangement

    This is a licence to occupy a designated chair/station at the above salon address. This is not a lease, tenancy, or employment contract. The chair renter operates as a self-employed barber and is responsible for their own tax, National Insurance and insurance.

    2. Payment structure

    3. Walk-in client allocation

    This section is important. Disagreements over walk-ins are the most common cause of conflict in barbershops.

    • Rotation system: Walk-in clients are allocated to the next available barber in rotation order. No skipping.
    • First available: Walk-in clients go to whoever is free. If multiple barbers are free, the client chooses.
    • Salon owner priority: The salon owner or senior barber gets first refusal on walk-ins. Remaining walk-ins go to other barbers.
    • Chair renter handles own clients only: The chair renter does not receive walk-in clients and relies on their own bookings.

    5. Equipment and products

    6. Hygiene responsibilities

    The chair renter agrees to:

    • Clean their station and chair after every client
    • Disinfect clipper blades between every client
    • Fully immerse combs and guards in Barbicide (minimum 10 minutes between clients)
    • Dispose of used razor blades in the designated sharps bin immediately after use
    • Never reuse a disposable blade
    • Use a fresh neck strip and towel/cape for every client
    • Wash hands before and after every client
    • Follow the salon's hygiene checklist (if one exists)
    • Keep their station tidy throughout the day

    7. Sharps disposal

    The chair renter understands that used razor blades must go in the sharps bin and never in the general waste. This is a legal requirement.


    8. Insurance

    The chair renter must hold the following insurance as a minimum:

    • Public liability insurance (minimum £___________ cover)

    • Treatment risk / malpractice insurance (if offering wet shaves or skin fades with blades)

    9. Booking and payments

    • Treat all clients, staff and other chair renters with respect
    • Not use the salon for any activity other than barbering
    • Not smoke, vape or consume alcohol on the premises during working hours
    • Follow the salon's social media and photography policy (if one exists)
    • Not make changes to the salon decor or their station without agreement

    11. Leaving the arrangement

    12. Ending the arrangement early

    Either party can end this agreement immediately (without notice) if:

    • The other party commits a serious breach of this agreement
    • The chair renter's insurance lapses and is not renewed
    • The salon is required to close permanently
    • There is a serious hygiene or safety violation

    How to use this template

    Read through every section with the person you are entering the arrangement with. Cross out anything that does not apply. Fill in the blanks. Make sure you both agree on the walk-in allocation section - this is where most disputes start. Print two copies, sign both, keep one each. Review the agreement once a year or whenever circumstances change (rent increase, new hours, etc). If in doubt about any section, get a solicitor to look it over before signing.

    Simpler than a beauty chair rental but must cover walk-in client allocation and sharps responsibilities.
