Allergic Reaction Protocol
What to do step-by-step if a client reacts during treatment.
Stop the treatment immediately
Remove or neutralise the product as quickly and safely as possible.
Assess the reaction
Mild (redness/itching) vs Severe (swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness).
Mild reaction
Apply a cool compress. Do NOT apply creams unless instructed by the client's doctor. Monitor for 30 minutes.
Severe reaction — call 999
If swelling around airways, breathing difficulty, or collapse — call 999 immediately. Say 'anaphylaxis'.
Use adrenaline if available
If the client carries an EpiPen/auto-injector, help them use it (outer thigh). Follow instructions on device.
Position the client
If breathing is difficult: sit them up. If feeling faint: lie them down with legs raised. Do NOT stand them up.
Record everything
Document: time, product, batch number, symptoms, actions taken. Take photos if client consents.
Report and follow up
Inform your insurer within 24 hours. File the incident in your records. Follow up with the client.
Keep this card printed and visible in your treatment area
In an emergency, you won't have time to search for it. Print it and pin it up.
