GHS hazard symbols with plain-English meanings for salons.
Corrosive
Burns skin, eyes, or metals on contact
In your salon: Acid peels, strong bleach, drain unblockers
Flammable
Catches fire easily — keep from heat and sparks
In your salon: Acetone, alcohol, aerosol hairsprays
Toxic
Can cause death or serious harm if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed
In your salon: Methanol-containing products (rarely used)
Harmful / Irritant
May cause irritation, allergic reaction, or drowsiness
In your salon: Hair dyes, nail dust, some adhesives
Health Hazard
May cause long-term health effects like cancer or organ damage
In your salon: Formaldehyde keratin treatments, acrylic monomer
Oxidiser
Can cause or intensify fire — store away from flammables
In your salon: Hydrogen peroxide (developer)
Gas Under Pressure
Container may explode if heated
In your salon: Aerosol sprays, compressed air
Environmental Hazard
Harmful to aquatic life — don't pour down drains
In your salon: Some cleaning chemicals, certain dyes
Explosive
May explode under heat, shock, or friction
In your salon: Very rare in salon settings
All products with these symbols must have a COSHH assessment. Store safety data sheets for every product you use.
