Patch Test Protocol
Step-by-step patch test procedure for beauty professionals.
Check product instructions
Read manufacturer guidance — some products specify exact patch test procedures.
Choose the test area
Behind the ear or inner elbow. Clean the area with mild soap and water.
Apply a small amount
Apply a 10p-coin-sized amount of the product to the test area. Don't cover it.
Wait 24–48 hours
The standard waiting period. Some manufacturers require 48 hours. Client must not wash the area.
Check for reactions
Look for redness, swelling, itching, burning, or blistering. Any reaction = do NOT proceed.
Record the result
Note the date, product used, batch number, area tested, and result on the client's record card.
Proceed or decline
If no reaction after the full wait time, proceed with treatment. If any doubt, don't treat.
Important
A patch test must be repeated if the client hasn't used the product for 6+ months, or if the product formulation changes. Skipping patch tests is the #1 insurance claim reason.
